M.E.S. Curriculum Information

The M.E.S. Readiness Curriculum Edition 1 is a valuable resource for parents and education providers. It is a 34 week intervention plan for students in grades Pre-K through 2nd grade that equips students with important foundational skills. Students learn various skills including letter identification, letter sounds, print concepts, phonemic awareness, rote counting, rational counting and much more. The curriculum was created for our target population to address educational gaps that exist in the community and their specific needs in producing better outcomes.

A cornerstone of our methods is the use of specially developed flash cards geared towards our student population. These flashcards were designed with images and cultural sensitivity that resonant with inner city experiences. The children will be able to more closely correlate the images to the letter sounds, thereby increasing retention and recognition.

M.E.S. serves mainly low-income, predominately minority children and families; therefore, we provide an array of programs geared specifically to address their needs such as our summer program. Students face a number of obstacles regarding learning, especially over the summer. A review on empirical studies by Cooper, et al. reveals that on average, the reading proficiency levels of students from lower income families decline over the summer months as compared to students from middle-income families.
